Netherlands handouts

Greetings to all the teachers attending the OUP events in Amsterdam, Apeldoorn, Tilburg and Rotterdam.

The handout for my first session on ‘Study skills and critical thinking’ is available here.

The handout for my second session on ‘Bringing lessons to life’ is available here. No here. I mean here.

It’s been a fun tour.

    Dear Ed,

I really enjoyed today’s workshop. It was very interesting and I liked your ideas as it comes to teaching English as foreign language.
I’ll try to practice your ideas in my classes. The only problem is that my classes are not too good at English. The kids are between 12 and 14 years old and most of them find it very difficulties to learn. Do you have any tips how to encourage my students and to show them that they can be successful at learning.
    Thank you!

    Kind regards,

    Iwonka Schot

    Hi Iwonka,
Thanks for your comments. It’s tricky, isn’t it? I agree with you about the importance of encouraging students. I’ve always believed that success at language learning has an awful lot to do with how the students are made to feel about themselves as learners and as individuals. Without encouragement I do not see how we can boost their confidence or have a positive impact on their attitude towards the learning situation. Perhaps this – for me, at least – one of the most important considerations in teaching generally.
If students have difficulties learning then it is also crucial to be patient and supportive.
    Good luck with your teaching!
